A new generation of HIV tests

Better2Know has launched the next generation of HIV tests with a new HIV assay. This fifth generation test is the first HIV screening test in Ireland to distinguish between HIV-1 antibodies, HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen. We only need a small blood sample to complete your test, and results will be available the day after your sample arrives in the testing laboratory.

You should wait 28 days since any incident you are concerned about before having this test.

The 5th Generation HIV test provides more information than ever before about your HIV status. A major advance is that this test can now detect and identify both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen individually in one blood sample.  This test can let you know which of these three markers (if any)  is positive. The 4th generation test reports on all three markers together.

By reporting on all three markers individually, if you test positive for any of the markers, it will mean that you can begin a more tailored treatment relevant to your needs much faster. The p24 antigen is detectable only in the early stages of an HIV infection.  The antibodies are the marker of a longer term established infection.  The 5th generation test can tell you whether your HIV infection is more likely to be acute (recent), or acquired more than three months ago.  This helps when considering if you need to tell former partners about your status.

HIV 1 and HIV 2 are two different viruses; HIV-1 is the more common virus worldwide.  They do both need different management. Medicines targeting HIV-1 will not usually be effective against the HIV-2 virus which is why it is important to know early on which viral type you have.

With over 33 million people now living with HIV globally, it is increasingly important to know your HIV status. Our CE marked 5th Generation HIV test is very accurate.  It is one of the best in detecting HIV infection.

All Better2Know positive HIV tests are confirmed before being reported to you by one of our sexual health experts. In the event you do test positive, we can help you every step of the way.  We will provide you with up to date advice, and referrals to access the next stages of treatment.
