Sex Hormone (SHBG) Testing

What is SHBG?

The SHBG protein, also known as Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin, is primarily generated by your liver. Upon its release into the bloodstream, SHBG binds to oestrogen and testosterone to transport these sex hormones into the blood in their inactive forms. Men and women have both oestrogen and testosterone, but their levels differ. For example, 70% of testosterone in women is bound to SHBG and 45% is bound to SHBG in men. The differences in SHBG binding between the sexes accounts for female and male physical characteristics.

Even slight changes in SHBG levels and, subsequently, testosterone and oestrogen can result in various symptoms. For men, decreased testosterone typically causes symptoms. Examining their SHBG levels can help determine the reasons behind decreased sex drive and erectile dysfunction. For women, small increases in testosterone can result in infertility, increased hairiness, acne, and amenorrhoea (no monthly periods).

Why consider this SHBG test?

Whether you are a man or a woman, you should take this test if you are suffering from any of the above symptoms. An SHBG test can help determine whether elevated or decreased testosterone levels are behind your symptoms.

Q: Why do you need my email address?

Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready. We do not sell on or email you any other marketing materials, that is why we do not ask you to opt in or out of anything.

Q: Do I need to use my real name?

No, but the postman does need to know where to deliver the kit to. As long as you use a name that will get the kit to you, then we do not need your real name.

Q: What does the kit packaging look like?

It will arrive in plain white envelope with your typed name and address on it.

Q: What if I have any more questions?
