HIV RNA PCR Testing

This test can detect the presence of the HIV virus just 10 days after any potential exposure.  It is only available as part of the Better2Know Early Detection Screen which includes tests for Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

PCR stands for 'Polymerase Chain Reaction' which is a testing method used.  It extracts and amplifies the genetic material of any organism in your blood sample. This tests for the presence of the viral RNA itself, so the window period is shorter compared with other types of HIV and STI testing. This means it can provide the earliest possible indication of infection.

This test is slightly less sensitive than the 28 Day HIV Duo test. So, if you choose this test we would recommend that you have a follow up HIV Duo test.  You should wait at least 28 days.

The results of the Early Detection Screen will be ready just three working days from when your sample is received in the testing laboratory.
