What is Gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is a Sexually Transmitted Infection caused by bacteria that can be spread by vaginal, penile, anal, or oral sexual contact and intercourse. The infection is often symptomless but, if symptoms are present, they may include unusual discharge, painful bowel movements, a sore throat, or a burning sensation when urinating. Women may experience vaginal bleeding, while men may suffer from swollen or painful testicles. More information about Gonorrhoea is available here.

What is the testing process?

Better2Know offers Instant Gonorrhoea testing across Ireland. You can choose any name your like for your appointment.  We do not need to know your real name.  At your appointment, you will be seen by an experienced clinician who will collect your sample. Like the Chlamydia Instant test, our Instant Gonorrhoea test requires a swab sample. For a woman, this will be a vaginal swab, and for a man it will be a urethral swab – a process which can be uncomfortable but not painful.

This test requires an incubation period (the time between potential exposure and testing) of 14 days. This may vary if you wish to combine the Instant Gonorrhoea test with tests for other STIs. Instant Gonorrhoea testing is included in our Instant Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea, Instant Four, Instant Peace of Mind and Instant Six screens.

Why should I get tested?

Gonorrhoea is curable and is treated with an injection and an oral dose of antibiotics, though early result in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), infertility and problems during pregnancy. In men, untreated Gonorrhoea can cause epididymitis and may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

When will I receive my results?

Your clinician will run the test by mixing the swab sample with a reagent solution and applying a few drops to a test cassette. A single line shows that the test has run successfully and is negative. Two lines mean that the test has run successfully and is positive. The process usually takes around 20 minutes to complete and results will be provided whilst you wait in the clinic.

What if my test is positive?

If your test is reactive, Better2Know will provide you with a prescription at your appointment at no extra charge. We can also assist you with referrals and a doctor’s consultation, should it be necessary.
